The block halfway up the stem holds a valve: blow through the hose and stale air leaves the hookah without you having to unscrew the base. At the bottom sits a diffuser that shrinks the bubbles and dampens the gurgling. On the tray lies a perforated plate where a glowing coal keeps burning while you move the bowl. Fresh coals are with the hookah coals.
